Why I love Teachers 2014

I'm in love with teaching

A few years ago I wrote a simple little post about the reasons I love Teachers. Since then, I’ve had a chance to work with some amazing Teachers through the International Teacher Development Institute. So, I thought it was time to bring the post out,  dust it off, and update my list of reasons.

I still believe that there’s a distinction between teachers who show up, and Teachers who are actively present in our classrooms. Few teachers are paid well, but the Teachers, well, we could never pay them what they’re worth because they are truly priceless.

Why?

Because they will stay awake until the wee hours, or wake up before dawn simply to attend, give, or moderate an online workshop in the name of professional development. Then, they’ll head off to teach a full day of classes. And, if they can’t manage to be there live, they’ll watch the recording later.

Because Teachers know that they aren’t “just teachers” regardless of what anyone else says.

Because Teachers will set aside their own discomfort or fears to in order learn how to use technology tools that might help them improve on what they’re already doing in their classrooms.

I also asked teachers in my online network, “Why do you they love Teachers?” Here’s what they had to say:

Because they are constantly learning, not only for themselves but above all, for their students. (Vicky Loras)

Because Teachers are friends who teach by example, and really listen to their students. (Malu Sciamarelli’s adult Business English students)

Because Teachers care. (Gareth Knight)

Because Teachers don’t answer questions; they make their students find their own answers (or maybe ask new questions!). Teachers look inside their students and see, not who they are, but who they can become. They always work to get the best out of their students  by making them leave their comfort zones. Teaching is a lifelong job with no retirement — and I love Teachers who keep on teaching with happiness! (Malu Sciamarelli)

Because Teaches act as guides along the path of learning. (Marjorie Rosenberg)

Because Teachers are like messengers. They carry an elevating message. (Nanòósha Nany)

Because Teachers listen. (Susie Sullivan)

Because Teachers enjoy growing and learning and being with their students. (Fabiana Casella)

Because Teachers care and they love us a lot. (Fabiana’s daughter, who is six and will soon start 1st Grade)

Do you have any more reasons to add to this list? Go ahead and add why you love Teachers in the comments!
